Ministries closer to nutrition policy

Share post:

Five years after initial conversations, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Ministry of Education are developing a school nutrition policy.

The two ministries, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), along with other stakeholders, on Wednesday engaged in the first of three consultations via the Webex meeting platform to get the ball rolling.

Acting Chief Education Officer Joy Adamson said the Ministry of Education continued to be concerned about children’s dietary habits, and was even more concerned about the number of school-aged children with non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

“I was at PAHO when we started such discussions in 2015, and five years on, we are hoping that we will have a final document that we would be able to share with our schools and our students. I can safely say that all of us are aware that in order to address this problem, we must change our children’s dietary habits. . .,” she said. (RA)
