Barbados’ sole authorised importer of Toyota vehicles, NASSCO Ltd, is reporting 2020 as a write-off year, and projecting a 50 per cent drop in new vehicle sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, says managing director Roger Hill, no major job losses are projected for the immediate future.

“We have been open now for close to eight weeks and the first four weeks was pretty horrible. We must say that in June things have looked a little better, but if we look at it in the overall industry with regards to new vehicles, we think that in comparison to last year, we are looking at a 50 per cent drop or more,” he said.

Hill said the impact was being felt across NASSCO operations, which included financing.

He was responding to questions following a walk-through of the River Road, St Michael dealership by Minister of Commerce Dwight Sutherland on June 26. (CLM)
