Psychologist: Look beyond the police

BARBADOS may have to look at having people other than police officers given the authority to remove people from the streets who are harming themselves or a threat to others.

The suggestion has come from clinical psychologist Dr Marcus Lashley, as he joined head of the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness (BAEH), Kemar Saffrey, to discuss mental health issues and the homeless on June 28, on Brass Tacks Sunday on Starcom Network.

Lashley, a former chair of the Mental Health Commission, said some people believed it should not be left to the police alone.

“I know we had made the recommendation, but it was not executed, but I think we now have to possibly go back to the drawing board and have that discussion again. (TG)
