Purity workers want to talk to management

Management at Purity Bakeries is expected to meet with workers “as soon as possible” to discuss the issues which led to the latter being off the job on Wednesday.

Communications specialist Simone Codrington told the media she believed the meeting would happen today.

Workers were off the job this morning and early visitors would have seen the main gates and pastry shop closed, and some staff speaking with representatives from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).

emmerson-leacockShop steward Emmerson Leacock (left) said there were “two key issues that we want to discuss first”. He declined to disclose what they were given the “sensitive nature”.

“We are waiting on management to reach out to us to have the meeting, and obviously you know in circumstances like this, most often than not, they are not going to meet with staff off the job,” he said.

“But staff would like to know that the meeting is indeed set and once the matters are addressed in favour of the workers, the workers are prepared to go back to work.”

The action has affected every area of operations, Leacock said.

Nation News understands the key issues surround temporary pay cuts, which were agreed upon as a result of the business environment caused by COVID-19, and a reduction in hours.

BWU deputy general secretary Dwaine Paul, was on the compound at Collymore Rock, St Michael, speaking to staff. (SAT)
