Barbados’ fastest man, Mario Burke, has used the coronavirus pandemic to enhance his bid for Olympic Games glory.
International sports are slowly returning in the aftermath of COVID-19 and the sprinter believes the time off took him to “another level” in track and field ahead of the rescheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
The 23-year-old ace sprinter is poised to make his debut in Japan next year after clocking an impressive 9.98 seconds last year to become the first Barbadian since Olympic bronze medallist Obadele Thompson to run under ten seconds in a 100-metre race.
“In terms of training, it [COVID-19] gave me time to elevate myself to another level . . . . I’m at a better place as an athlete. I am ready to compete. I have some meets that are supposed to be in August and I just hope I get to go to them,” Burke said during the Nation’s Let’s Talk Sports Show on Thursday night. (ACG)
