Thirty-three electric buses are in Barbados, and when they hit the road, it will be a boost for members of the community with disabilities.
The buses arrived at the Bridgetown Port on Wednesday morning and Minister of Transport, Works and Maintenance Dr William Duguid described it as a historic and momentous day.
He said the buses are capable of kneeling – which means they have no steps, and the entrance can be raised or lowered to get closer to the sidewalk for wheelchair access. They also have ramps for wheelchairs and foldable seats so wheelchairs can be carried on the buses.
“These are fully air-conditioned buses that will be wifi enabled as well. So this is a complete transformation and it is the largest electric fleet of buses in the CARICOM region, in the Caribbean certainly,” Duguid said.
“And as soon as possible as we can get these buses commissioned, they will be available and on the roads to transport the people of Barbados”.
Minister in the Ministry of Transport Peter Phillips said it was another promise kept by the Barbados Labour Party.
“We intend to improve tremendously the transportation system within Barbados. The travelling public has waited long. There have been many complaints and so on from time to time, but we have moved as best as we can to improve the situation, to improve the service being offered by the Transport Board,” he said.
Several officials from the Ministry were on hand to witness the arrival of the buses. (SAT)
