The return of international cricket was short lived as rain disrupted the first day of the opening Test between England and the West Indies.
Play was delayed for three hours but when the players finally took to the field at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton for the first ever bio-secure series behind closed doors, both teams marked the occasion by taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
A moment of silence was also observed to remember the lives lost because of the coronavirus pandemic, and West Indies icon Sir Everton Weekes who passed away on July 1.
England won the toss and elected to bat first.
Opener Dom Sibley was bowled, offering no shot to Shannon Gabriel’s fourth delivery of the second over, which clipped the top of off stump.
Rory Burns ended the day on 20, Joe Denly scored 14 and England reached 35-1 at stumps, bad light forcing an early close with only 17.4 overs being bowled. (AGB)
