Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) public relations officer Carl Padmore this morning appealed to residents to be careful of where they place garbage and to avoid illegal dumping.
This is after an incident around 8:55 a.m. where a Barbados Light and Power wire was snagged while a crew member from the SSA was removing garbage with a bobcat along Baxter’s Road, St Michael.
Padmore said while the initial “explosion” was a shock to the workers, they were all safe thanks to quick “evasive action”.
Bobcat operator Gregory Alleyne said: “I was just loading the garbage from at the side of the road and some person put a whole heap of tree limbs down on the electrical line. And when I was just moving it, it just exploded. But I would like the general public to just be aware of where they putting down their refuse and make it safe for everybody.”
However, Jennifer Blackman, of the Barbados Light and Power Company said, after a conversation with the technical crew, there was no explosion and no outages as a result of the incident.
“An SSA bobcat snagged one of the low tension wires this morning. There was no explosion. They called us immediately and we responded immediately and a BL&P crew is on site dealing with the matter,” said Blackman.
Padmore asked residents to consider the safety of SSA workers.
“When they place stuff on this site, our guys would not be checking to see if there are underground cables from any source, so the bobcat struck somethinhg and they took evasive action,” he said. (KG)
