Wife reflects on ‘Owen the family man’

Following is a statement from Julie Arthur on the passing today of her husband Owen Arthur, former Prime Minister of Barbados.

“Barbados has lost a visionary whose devotion to his constituency, country and region knew no bounds. Owen paved the way for Barbados to be recognised not only throughout the Caribbean but also internationally by breaking down barriers that many others could not even begin to fathom. His leadership, work ethic, passion and courage have always set him apart.

“Above all, he loved his family fiercely. We saw him as a jack of all trades. Whilst the public knew him as a politician, we knew him as a provider, a chef, an avid gardener, and a support system. To know Owen was to know his pride in his children, his upbringing, and his origins in St Peter. He was a true “man of the soil”. He lived by the words of our National Pledge and resultantly leaves behind a legacy that will be ingrained in our history’s pages.

“On behalf of Sabrina, Leah, and I, we extend a heartfelt thanks to the people of Barbados for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May he rest in peace in the arms of God.” (PR)
