Teaching must widen its focus from impartation of academic wisdom, to concentrating on the creation of the all-round citizen, if Barbados is to continue to press forward to greatness.
This was the admonition from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to the 221 graduates of the Erdiston Teachers’ Training College during a virtual ceremony on Saturday night.
Delivering the feature remarks, Mottley contended it was pointless for a student to be equipped with the knowledge that could help propel Barbados to new heights, yet their moral compass is not calibrated correctly.
“In the words of former [US] president Theodore Roosevelt, ‘to educate a man’s mind and not his morals, is to create a menace to society’. I want us to think on these things because it is the values that we share and values that we instill in our children that will make the difference between them understanding that right is right and wrong is wrong, and the two cannot be substituted for each other,” said Mottley.
