Deacons closing in on titles

Deacons moved closer to repeating as Division 2 men’s and women’s champions when the Goddard Enterprises Volleyball League continued with a key triple-header on the Deacons’ court on Sunday.

The men’s kings not only avenged their first- round loss to Wow Foundation United but their impressive 25-14, 25-17 win put Deacons on 20 points from a 7-1 record with the crown being in touching distance.

Foundation needed to stop Deacons to maintain a three-way battle with Chargers for the title. Foundation look good for one-third of each set as they mistakenly celebrated a few crushing spikes before stitching together those winning shots with silly serving errors, multiple attacks into the net or out of court, as well as equally poor reception and net and ground defence.

On the other hand, Deacons, with veteran Elwyn Oxley leading the way and his brother Patrick Oxley as setter, ran a varied attack which unleashed some weapons which seemed almost overkill against a hapless Foundation. (KB)
