Be warned that when criminals grow tired of shooting each other, they will turn on the police and the political order, says Leader of the Opposition Bishop Joseph Atherley.

“Mark my words!” he stated yesterday in the House of Assembly during debate on the Police (Amendment Bill) 2019.

“When the chorus is sounded that they are killing each other so don’t bother about it, that is not an advisable position. When they are done training the guns on each other they will then train them on law enforcement in Barbados and when that is not sufficient they will train them on the political authorities,” said the Member of Parliament for St Michael West.

The state of crime is worsening, with perpetrators showing less and less respect for the law while some “elements of society” had become “untouchables”, said Atherley, a former Minister of Home Affairs.

He referenced last week’s shooting which occurred less than 100 metres from the Black Rock Police Station as he warned against growing disrespect for the law. (GC)
