Guyana supporting American candidate to head IDB

GEORGETOWN – The newly elected Guyana government says it will support the United States candidate, Mauricio Claver-Carone, for the post of President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

A government statement said “Claver-Carone’s experience in senior positions of the US Treasury Department, the US National Security Council and as US Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) augur well for his presidency”.

The IDB board of directors said that the election will take place at a virtual meeting of the IDB Governors on September 12-13, this year, and the winner will succeed Colombian Luis Alberto Moreno, whose term ends on September 30.

“The nomination of Mr Mauricio Claver-Carone demonstrates the US commitment to leadership in important regional institutions, and the advancing of prosperity and security in the Western Hemisphere. His leadership of the IDB is expected to strengthen its ability to deliver development impact to the region,” the Guyana government statement added.

Apart from Guyana, the other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries that are members of the IDB are Barbados, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname. (CMC)
