The fact that Barbados did not have a Crop Over Festival this year is “a big hit to the economy”, says Central Bank Governor Cleviston Haynes.
He is also concerned about the seeming “demise” of long-standing regional carrier LIAT and hopes other carriers will be able to “fill the void”.
“On the issue of Crop Over . . . it’s a big hit to the economy because a lot of people depend on the activity around the Crop Over season. It’s part of our tourism and because it’s part of the tourism it filters down across various segments of the economy,” Haynes said during his half-year press conference on Wednesday at the Courtney Blackman Grande Salle.
“Obviously, the entertainment sector I think would have been very hard hit because this is really the major time for persons in the entertainment sector, but also in retail, in advertising, whatever sector you think about would be hit by the fact that there has been no activity basically for Crop Over this year.” (SC)
