Northern plight

At least one person had to be rescued when several homes flooded after raging waters engulfed the north of the island in a matter of hours yesterday.

Residents in St Lucy, St Peter and St Andrew endured a terrifying two-hour downpour that once again left the flood prone Gills Terrace and Church Street householders racing to higher ground and then with the headache of a muddy clean-up.

Member of Parliament Colin Jordan joined the St Peter District Emergency Organisation led by chairman Dave Hurley on a tour of the badly hit areas and promised that something will be done to protect the lives and livelihoods of those constantly in the path of the raging waters.

“This is a matter that has been going on for far too long. This situation has to be addressed. We had scary situations. The water in Gills Terrace rises rapidly and there were situations where one person had to be rescued from a house this morning,” said Jordan, who added that the rescue was carried out by a member of the DEO.
