Blackbirds in early lead

Volleyball Queens UWI Blackbirds made an impressive start to the defence of their Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One crown when the league season began on Monday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.
One week ago, the Blackbirds captured the knockout title and on Monday night they scored a straight sets win over Burger King Clapham Toners 25-14, 25-18, 25-18. Toners never looked the team which had threatened UWI with elimination in the semi-finals of the knockouts.
Chargers, who lost their bid to defend the knockout crown when they were defeated by Deacons in the semis, seemed to be avenging that loss when they went up two sets against the same Deacons.
Smith in control
However, with Deann Smith taking control with her attacks and defence and veteran Julia Lewis emerging from her slumber, Deacons took the match 26-28, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-6. (KB)
