Barbados’ main geriatric hospital is to be relocated from Beckles Road to Waterford, St Michael, within the environs of the National Botanical Gardens.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has revealed plans for a new “purpose-built facility that allows us to treat to the most acute needs of those who are elderly and who do not have the support systems or the finances in order to support themselves”.

She did not give any details on the size, cost or timeline for the new facility.

Mottley said the Geriatric Hospital, built in the 19th century, presented some difficulties to staff having to navigate the movement of the acute patients, among more than 200 who live there. Also, in its current location, the Geriatric Hospital is susceptible to threats of serious flooding or hurricanes, Mottley said. (GC)
