Police are investigating a daring attempted robbery at the Worthing, Christ Church branch of ShopSmart on Tuesday, which left a male employee nursing two gunshot injuries.

Managing director Wallace Griffith of the membership store chain was unavailable for comment, but a source close to the business told Nation News the worker remained hospitalised after being shot in the arm and chest.

“There was not even a confrontation. The employee who was injured was just down the aisle when the incident occurred,” the official added.

Police public relations officer, acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, said they were awaiting further information from investigators, but reports reaching them indicated two men stormed into the store around 4 p.m. demanding money, after which a number of shots rang out.

Inniss said he could not say if cash was taken before the two ran off.

The incident led to a large police presence at the store, resulting in traffic delays in the area for most of the evening. (BA)
