Adult Acne

Share post:

Dear Doc,

I recently saw a young man, probably in his late 20s with his face full of acne. What causes such bad acne in adults?

Jerome

Dear Jerome,

The causes of acne in adults are very similar to those in the young people. These include oily skin, blocked skin pores, changes in hormones, excess sweat, bacteria, side effects of certain medications and sometimes it can be an indication of underlying illnesses such as autoimmune or endocrine disorder. Some women often have acne flares around their menstrual cycle as a result of the change in hormones which influences the skin. If endocrine and any underlying causes are ruled out, skincare is very crucial in preventing or treating acne. Treatment of acne includes washing your face twice a day with the appropriate soap, usually products containing benzoyl peroxide, ensuring to avoid your eyes. Changing pillow cases frequently. In persistent cases one will need to seek help of dermatologist for prescription creams and in some scenarios tablets.
