I’d say my diet has been a contribution to my good health.” That’s the assertion of Buggy Nhakente, this month’s cover feature, who shares how good food and good vibes helps him maintain a healthy and wholesome lifestyle. Rarely does Better Health repeat a cover story, but we thought it was fitting to begin the new year with encouragement through an example that shows if you keep on doing good things to your body, then you will remain in top health.

Buggy Nhakente (his name means “The Spirit of the people expressed through music”) was featured seven years ago in our April issue, so check out how he looks now.

Last year really showed us how important that human connection is. We took for granted how important and impactful a simple touch, hug or kiss in greeting was until the pandemic came along and virtually forbade us from communicating physically. Our expressions to each other were restricted to looks and words. Nonetheless, our human connection became stronger as a result of the shared awfulness of the spectre of COVID-19.

Something else which helps us connect to learn about, understand further, get support or even be an activist for various conditions that impact health is the awareness months, weeks and days. There are several every month of the year. Some are common, some are popular and others are lesser or unknown.

Better Health will be highlighting these awareness months/weeks/days throughout the year. As such, if you are impacted by any of these conditions and would like to share your experience so that others can learn and understand, please contact us.

This January month is known in Barbados as Drug Awareness Month. We therefore highlight a positive side of the impact of drugs – those positive ones the human body produces – also known as hormones. We also take a look at some of the newest harmful recreational drugs.

In the UK, January is Love Your Liver Month, and below is a list of other health concerns of which you should be aware this month:

• Birth Defects Awareness

• Blood Donor Month

• Cervical Health Awareness Month

• Healthy Weight Awareness

• National Birth Defects Prevention Month

• National Folic Acid Awareness Week

• National Glaucoma Awareness Month

• National Radon Action Month

• National Stalking Awareness Month

• National Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness Month

• Thyroid Awareness Month

Here’s wishing you a happy and healthy 2021!
