The unsatisfactory condition of the National Stadium track has forced the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) to stage the first three meets of the new track and field season at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.

Last month, officials at the AAB announced April 24 as the start date for the 2021 athletics season with the Back On Track 1 event, but at the time, venues were yet to be determined.
However, AAB public relations officer Esther Maynard has revealed that the University of the West Indies has granted permission for the use of the Ryan Brathwaite Track at the Lazaretto, St Michael.

“We got the greenlight for the Usain Bolt facility for April and May. We said the meets would be on synthetic surfaces, but things like that take a while to organise and get approval for and we are now in that stage of planning.

“We secured the track at UWI and we are very grateful because it is the type of surface our athletes need to compete on,” she told Weekend Sport yesterday during a telephone interview.

“We sent out all the circulars to our members and our online registration is currently ongoing. We are alerting everyone with the relevant information as well as the technical regulations and the protocols will impact on that,” she added. (AG-B)
