A woman is back at the helm of local boxing.
Former national junior volleyball player Dr Melissa Branford-Jones has been elected as the new president of the Barbados Boxing Association (BBA) following a comfortable victory yesterday during a four-hour-long closed-door annual general meeting (AGM) at the Wildey Gymnasium which was done in hybrid style due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before a crowd of administrators on the ground floor of the Garfield Sobers Complex, the physician polled 34 votes to knock out her closest challenger, former champion boxer Junior Greenidge, who gained 24 votes. Guyanese-national and businessman Gardel Roberts secured just two votes.
An angry and frustrated Greenidge, a former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, questioned the results and format of the AGM, which was held virtually and physically, stating that he will now quit his coaching duties after the defeat. Interestingly, all of Greenidge’s ballots were online.
