Several residents of Rose Hill, St Peter, were jolted out of their beds on Saturday night after hearing gunshots and the cries of terrified neighbours.

Residents said both sounds were unforgettable, and so was the victim – Acting Station Sergeant Newton Lewis.

The 46-year-old father of four, who was off-duty, was shot and killed after attempting to assist the operator of the nearby catering business, who ran for Lewis’ assistance after three gunmen attempted to rob the business.

According to the police report, the incident occurred around 9:05 p.m, and after Lewis ran to assist, his next-door neighbour, retired police inspector Lionel Ward, also got involved. (TG)
