The National Anthem of Barbados echoed through the streets of Monaco yesterday afternoon as 17-year-old Formula 3 driver Zane Maloney wrote his name on history’s page with victory in Race 2 at the Monte Carlo Circuit.

Starting in pole position, Maloney produced a flawless drive to notch his first win of the season and he held off the formidable challenge of teammate Isack Hadjar, who finished second. Maloney and Hadjar shared similar fortunes this weekend as the Frenchman crossed the finish line first in Saturday’s opening race, while Maloney was runner-up.

“Huge happiness to win here in Monaco. I am sure all Barbados will be cheering, and I hope this will bring other young drivers from my country close to motorsport. It was not easy to keep Isack behind, and at every restart I was thinking how to do it better and what to improve. Finally, all went well and I hope to continue in this direction, growing race after race,” Maloney said after his triumph.

Maloney, a product of St Gabriel’s and The St Michael schools and Lockerbie College, showed immense concentration and bravery to maintain the lead throughout despite three restarts due to collisions along the course. One notable incident occurred at the beginning of the race between Prema Powerteam’s David Vidales and Swiss driver Gregoire Saucy. As a result, Saucy did not finish the race, adding to his Monaco misery after a double win in Barcelona in Round 2. (NM/MK)
