The Olympic dream of experienced Barbadian surfer Chelsea Roett has been shattered after she reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 following her arrival in El Salvador for the ISA World Surfing Games, which are the final surfing qualifier for the Tokyo Games.

In a statement yesterday evening, team manager Margot Tuach told Sun Sport that 564 competitors and event officials were PCR tested for COVID-19 between Wednesday and Thursday.

“Of these, 28 have tested positive. Athletes and officials from 20 of the 51 national teams have been impacted. Unfortunately, Barbados is one of those teams with one team member testing positive on two consecutive tests.

“That team member, along with the other positive cases, is now being cared for in an isolation hotel arranged by the government of El Salvador,” Tuach said without identifying which surfer had tested positive. However, reports indicate Roett was quarantined and was due to undergo a retest. (EZS)
