The Barbados senior men’s national football team left the island today to travel to the Dominican Republic for the second round of the Concacaf FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Barbados currently sit third in Group D with three points from two games.

The Tridents will play the host nation on June 4 and Dominica on June 8.

Head coach Russell Latapy announced a 24-member squad for this leg. It comprises seven Under-20 nationals as well as several overseas based players.

However, the team will be without regular skipper Rashad Jules who was injured. Nick Blackman was also not included after Maccabi Tel-Aviv did not release him. They are scheduled to play in the Israel state Cup final on Wednesday. Ryan Trotman, who is based in The Netherlands, tested positive for COVID-19 and was also excluded.

Latapy hailed the work ethic of the Under-20 players, complimenting them on raising their intensity during the training camp.

“The team picks itself on the training pitch. The younger guys have shown up, bought into the philosophy, and are working hard. We understand we are asking a lot of them, and they still must get used to international football at this level, but they are working hard, and I am looking forward to working with them. I think because of them, Barbados’ football has a bright future,” he said. (Nation News)
