Dear Doc,
Do you and any doctor on island treat gall stones with laser technology? Would you say the laser technology is better than any other treatment? – Nathan Dear Nathan,
Gallstones are treated by one of two methods, a procedure known as a laparotomy or secondly laparoscopic surgery. In a laparotomy a large surgical incision “cut” is made to open the abdomen and remove the gallbladder. This method is more invasive and has a longer recovery time, usually 3-5 days. In a laparoscopy, four small puncture holes are made and the procedure is less complicated with smaller scars and faster recovery time. With regards to laser technology, that tends to be reserved for kidney stones and is available in Barbados with the urologist. Gallstones are removed by general surgeons and both techniques are available and are frequently done on island.
