Pain In The Nose

Dear Doc,

I never thought I would be writing to you, but here I am. You seem, from your responses, to be a sensitive and caring person. I am writing to ask you to explain why one of my nostrils hurt.

I found that in the last week when I pressed my nose bridge I flinched in pain because the pressure hurt inside my left nostril. I’ve not been blowing my nose very hard, though I had a slight congestion. What could be the cause of that pain? – Carson Dear Carson,

Pain in your nostrils can indicate many different things. Some possibilities include rhinitis, which is excessive sneezing and itching of the nose and often the eyes. Some individuals may have nosebleeds, but this is often painless. Other concerns could be an injury to the area such as the nose bridge which can be easily fractured.

In addition, one may have a mass growing within the nose which is putting pressure on the nasal canal.

Some individuals have pain around or close to the nose and may confuse the two. The area around the nose can be empty spaces in the skull that we call sinuses, and these can be full of fluid and can become infected.

However, to obtain a definitive diagnosis I highly recommend you seek medical attention, particularly an ENT specialist, to be examined and sent for the appropriate tests to determine the cause.
