ROSEAU – High Court Judge Bernie Stephenson-Brooks ordered India-born, Antigua & Barbuda citizen, Mehul Choksi to appear in court on Wednesday, as she began hearing arguments regarding his illegal entry last month into Dominica.

Choksi, who has been detained at the Dominica-Friendship hospital, was not in court at the start of the hearing of the habeas corpus filed by his attorneys.

But the judge ruled that he has to present himself to the court before the end of the working day.

This past Friday, the High Court kept in place the interim injunction restricting his repatriation until the matter is fully ventilated in court.

The judge also ruled this past Friday the application for habeas corpus will be heard in open court on Wednesday and that “there shall be no publication or discussion or notification of the press regarding this matter without leave and/or permission of the court”.

Choksi, 62, was granted Antigua & Barbuda citizenship four years ago under the island’s Citizenship by Investment Programme (CBI).

He is wanted by the Indian judicial authorities for criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and dishonesty, including delivery of property, corruption and money laundering.

Indian authorities want him extradited to face the charges which he denies.
