Chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, today expressed his disapproval of the importation of chicken breast and pork chops from the United States.

During a press conference at the BAS headquarters, The Grotto, St Michael, earlier today, he said the act should be condemned by the relevant authorities and the businesses responsible should be sanctioned.

Paul said the meat was being sold at two major supermarkets, adding that at a time like this, when the island was trying to bounce back from the economic ruin of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, more effort should go towards supporting local farmers, who he said played a significant role in stabilising the economy since the first COVID-19 case in Barbados in March 2020.

Although he said he could not give details about the quantity of meat imported or the date of importation, he said they were being sold below the local market price and undermining the agricultural sector. (SB)
