Barbados’ oldest centenarian passed away on Wednesday night.

Former master saddler Melville Williams died at his home at Lonesome Hill, St Peter. He was 111 years old.

Williams lost the roof of his home during the passage of Hurricane Elsa earlier this month. He moved out and returned on Wednesday after repairs were completed, but passed away hours later.

At 100 years old, he was still working as a saddler and catching the bus. Seven years later, he boasted of being able to read the Nation newspaper without glasses, but his mobility had declined.

He turned 111 in February and the family hosted a Zoom meeting in which he participated. (SAT)
