Minister of People Empowerment Cynthia Forde called for the reopening of the Alma Parris Memorial School or the creation of another similar facility to cater to the educational needs of slow learners.

Forde said closure of Alma Parris had left a void, while former students of that school had gone on to excel and distinguish themselves in various areas of endeavour.

She was speaking in the House of Assembly today on a land resolution bill related to the sale of the site of the former Louis Lynch Secondary School.

The former educator said there must be an institution that can respond to the particular skills and abilities of those students who may find the traditional school curriculum challenging but have the capacity to excel in other areas.

Alma Parris School, located at Speightstown, St Peter, was closed in July 2017 after 22 years.

In May of the following year, then Opposition Leader Mia Mottley said if elected, her party would reopen the school.

“A Barbados Labour Party Government would have to not only reintroduce Alma Parris, but also ensure that the other two alternative secondary schools are provided for, so that these children receive the full opportunity to become the best that they can be, because we really must understand, that on this island of 270 000 each one must matter in this country.”  (CG)
