UPDATE: Police identify victim in Pilgrim Road accident

The person who died following a head-on collision at Pilgrim Road, Christ Church earlier today was identified as Richard Newton, 66, of Sealy Hall, St John.

Newton, who was an employee of the Ministry of Health, was the driver of a pick-up, which collided with a minibus.

Police officers and emergency personnel responded to the accident, which reportedly occurred around 10:45 a.m.

“It involved two vehicles a white . . . pickup owned by the Ministry of Health, which was travelling in the direction of Oistins, [Christ Church] and a . . .  minibus which was travelling in the opposite direction. They collided head on.

“The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead on the spot,” according to a statement from police.

Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic, who was at the scene, expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the victim.

The driver of the minibus complained of injuries to the feet and chest pains. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for medical attention. Police said ten passengers in the minibus complained of various injuries – two were taken to the QEH. One passenger was transported to the Randall Phillips Polyclinic in Oistins and the remaining seven were discharged, seeking private medical attention.

Investigations are ongoing.
