Barbados has its first Ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
He is Phillip St Hill, who is also Ambassador of Barbados to the Republic of Cuba.
St Hill presented copies of his credentials, accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Government of Barbados to the Dominican Republic to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, on Wednesday.
Ambassador St Hill, who remains based in Havana, Cuba, expressed how “pleased and honoured” he was to become the first ambassador of Barbados to the Dominican Republic, and pledged to give his best effort towards the expansion and strengthening of relations between the two countries.
Two key areas he hopes to focus on in his new role are culture and health, and in the near future the area of bio-technology research.
Minister Alvarez said that he was pleased with St Hill’s appointment and agreed with him that there were several areas of cooperation between the two countries that could be easily explored.
He noted that the Dominican Republic was anxious to re-enliven its relations with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), given that for many years, his country was part of the wider Caribbean arrangement, commonly known as CARIFORUM.
The Foreign Minister also said that he looks forward to increased cooperation with Barbados. (BGIS)
