MONA – University of the West Indies (UWI) officials are celebrating their steady rise in the rankings of global universities.
From the global field of about 30 000 universities and elite research institutes, UWI now stands in the top 1.5 per cent up from three per cent in the prior year.
“This is a spectacular performance,” UWI vice-chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said in a media release.
“While we have maintained our No.1 position in the Caribbean, and top one per cent of the best in Latin America and the Caribbean, the surge to the top 1.5 per cent in the world gives us a considerable degree of professional satisfaction as a management and leadership team.
“The top global tier is where we set out to position our university and we have reached there.”
UWI said the ranking was reward for the strategic decision taken five years ago to prepare and position the institution for global competitive rankings
The university said the choice to engage the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking system was based on its standing as the most reputable and independently quality assured.
Its annual rankings have become a standard measuring tool in the comparative performances of the best global universities.
The rankings for next year, released in early September 2021, showed UWI soared within the scales, moving up a very impressive 94 places.
