General secretary of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), Senator Dr Jerome Walcott, says the party was not caught off guard by the decision of Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic not to contest the next General Election.

He said yesterday the BLP had known for some time that the two-time Member of Parliament for The City had no intention of going for a third term.

“It was not a case leaving the party in a lurch. He is not leaving Parliament, he has just indicated that he would not be contesting the next General Election, so there is no void. This has been known for a while; this is not the first time that he has indicated this intention,” said Walcott.

Bostic told the Saturday Sun that while he is stepping down as an MP at the end of this five-year term, he is still willing to serve the Government in any capacity required of him. Saying this decision was by no means an easy one, Bostic explained that the two years of leading the charge in the fight against COVID-19 had taken a toll on him and his family. (CLM)
