Barbados suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat to Bermuda in their opening game of Group C of the Concacaf Under-20 qualifiers Saturday night at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo.

The junior Tridents were off to a dream start when Bermuda’s Jakeem Jennings was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge on centre-back Tyrique Bailey and Kyle Forde-Blades earned a penalty after getting on the end of a searching ball from Jamaal-Watson Cummins.

Captain Kevon Lucas, on debut, kept his composure to drill his shot past  Coleridge Fubler from 12 yards and give Barbados the lead in the 35th minute.

Jarryd Richardson equalised following a quick freekick before Keyni Mills’ passed the ball into an empty net as Bermuda went in 2-1 at half time.

Substitute Zuhri Morris thought he grabbed a late point for Barbados with a side-footed finish in the 90th minute but Stefan Jones inflicted pain on the Tridents with a late winner for Bermuda just seconds after.

The result means that Bermuda sit second in the group standing behind St Vincent and the Grenadines who won 3-1 against Puerto Rico by default. Barbados are third and will have to win both of their remaining games against Puerto Rico on Monday and St Vincent on Wednesday. (AGB)
