Barbadians’ attitudes to the protection of the marine environment are changing, albeit slowly.
This from marine biologist and dive operator Andre Miller, as the island celebrates Dive Fest 2021, the annual event which focuses a spotlight on the island’s marine and dive culture.
This year’s activities kicked off on Sunday with a lionfish hunt and dive and a subsequent cookout at the Barbados Blue Watersports’ dive shop at Needhams Point, St Michael.
The week’s activities include dives at various sites around the island and an underwater clean-up.
“The problem with protection or lack thereof is that so many Barbadians do not know what is at stake. They do not know what is under there and most people who see a coral reef in Barbados weren’t born here,” Miller told the DAILY NATION. (HLE)
