Barbados’ first major event as a Parliamentary republic turned into the coronation of Robyn Rihanna Fenty, as this country’s newest, and only second living National Hero.

At 12:43 a.m. today, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley delivered the surprising news to Barbadians at National Heroes Square, and Rihanna, as the world renowned songstress is popularly known, held her throbbing chest in surprise, before being called to the dais moment after His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales had made a brief speech at this country’s presidential installation.

Mottley said her administration would look at the possibility of adding even more National Heroes next year, but a recommendation had been made to President-elect, Dame Sandra Mason, for Rihanna to be named a National Hero, and it was approved.

Rihanna, already an Ambassador for Barbados, decked out in a flowing bronze dress down to her ankles and rocking large braids, then made her way to the stage in the capital City, where she was congratulated by the newly installed president, and hugged by Mottley.

She also received words of congratulation from His Royal Highness, Prince of Wales.

Sir Garfield Sobers, the country’s first and only living National Hero until last night, was also in attendance to see Rihanna become the island’s 11th National Hero.

The honour will be conferred during the ceremony at Heroes Square at 10 a.m. today. (BA)
