Cemix, a subsidiary of Jada Group Inc. has joined forces with the Cancer Support Services to provide free prostate screenings for men.

On Saturday, November 13, about 50 men turned up at Cancer Support Services’, Dayrells Road, St Michael office, where they received their PSA tests, which were facilitated through a donation from Cemix.

Philip Tempro, chief executive officer of Jada, in presenting the cheque, noted that the company had always contributed to cancer services.

He said they had made contributions to breast and childhood cancers but shifted more focus to prostate cancer due to the high number of men being affected by the disease.

“Every kilometer of concrete that we sell we put aside money to put into this,” he said adding that their trucks were also outfitted with signs about prostate cancer.

Tempro underscored the need for early screening.

“We are happy to be part of that and happy to help people get tested early,” he said, noting that the construction industry was dominated by men.

The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. It measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood.

PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in males. (MB)
