Management of the Esso Service Station in Paynes Bay, St James are apologising to their former workers for dismissing them via a WhatsApp message.

On Sunday December 5, a letter signed by Tonya Trotman of Parkwood Enterprises Inc., the company which leased the station from SOL Petroleum, said: “Please accept our apologies for the delayed notice as well as the approach used in ending operations at Esso Paynes Bay. “We do have reason which impacted on the late notice, and this information is being communicated to the Barbados Labour Department.”

On Independence Day staff were informed that operations at the service station had ceased around 3:15 p.m. through a WhatsApp group chat, which said: “Effective from today November 30, 2021 Parkwood Enterprises Incorporated will cease operation at Esso Paynes Bay and there will be a change of ownership/retailership.”

Shocked and upset

The former workers said they were shocked and upset about the late notice and the way in which they were informed about their dismissal, adding that none of their queries about severance were answered. (SB)
