Officials from the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) are optimistic about the future of local horse racing after the successful staging of Boxing Day at the Races card on Monday at the Garrison Savannah.

While horse racing made its competitive return since the Welcome Back Race Day this past June this past Boxing Day on Monday was the first time this year that supporters were allowed into the venue.

The BTC intended to stage the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup on Boxing Day for the first time in its history, but uncertainty about the presence of spectators caused the racing authority to pull the plug on the plans.

Only vaccinated spectators were permitted entry into the historic racetrack, and they all had to observe the well-established protocols related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of hand sanitisation, the wearing of masks, and physical distancing. (NM)
