The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) wants the Mia Amor Mottley administration to be accountable for the thousands of dollars it claims was not paid to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) for flagship jobs that Government created following the high increase of unemployment associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
During the DLP’s response to the Financial Statement And Budgetary Proposals on Tuesday night, former candidate for St Michael North West and country manager of a restaurant chain, Ryan Walters, said that while his party was pro employment and was pleased to see many former unemployed workers getting job opportunities, these “political jobs” were disenfranchising people.
Speaking at DLP headquarters, George Street, Belleville, St Michael, Walters was making reference to jobs in community elderly care, the National Conservation Commission clean-up programmes which included the volcanic ash and Hurricane Elsa clean- ups and community liaison officers.
“Government said they spent $76 million (and) over 3 500 people got something in their pocket. We cannot discount that but how much of that $76 million and how [many] of those 3 500 persons were able to contribute to the NIS. Government does not take responsibility for this at all,” Walters said. (SB)
