PM: Remote work needs more research

Government is committed to creating work-from-home policies, says Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, but needs a clear understanding of all of the pros and cons.

She said that while many employers will be eager to carry on with the hybrid approach to work after the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is not enough data to quantify the challenges of working from home.

Mottley, delivering the feature remarks at the National Union of Public Workers’ (NUPW) 77th annual conference on Thursday night via pre-recorded video, reiterated that her administration was keen on implementing the long-awaited flexible work framework as “a matter of urgency this year”.

“There is no doubt at the social level that the impact of the pandemic on every aspect of life has served as a major driver of change, not least of which is on the labour market and the workplace.

“It is now recognised that companies would find it most cost-effective to allow various categories of workers to work remotely. While this would affect savings in the size of office rental spaces, utilities and other outgoings for businesses, there are a number of features of this pattern of work that are of concern,” said Mottley. (CLM)
