More than 30 000 Barbados Water Authority (BWA) customers are expected to suffer “heavy” disruption in their supply over the next two days, but BWA general manager Keithroy Halliday says this is unavoidable as urgent repairs are needed at the Belle Pumping Station, which provides about a third of the country’s drinking water.
With businesses in and around Bridgetown among those to be heavily impacted, even a plea by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) to have the repairs done after-hours has been turned down.
“This is unavoidable. We are dealing with an infrastructure that is 70 years old and we’ve been monitoring it carefully as we do all of our systems and pumping stations. In the last inspection, we were told we need to urgently deal with this and not delay it anymore,” Halliday told the DAILY NATION yesterday at a press conference at the St Michael pumping station.
He was accompanied by acting Minister of Water Resources Dr Romel Springer, BWA chairman Stevon Roberts and director of engineering Charles Leslie. (TG)
