Barbados’ athletes ended the 49th edition of the CARIFTA Games here with a tally of 11 medals.
On another encouraging evening for the 17-member team at Jamaica’s National Stadium, Layla Haynes brought the silver lining with a second-place finish in the Under-20 girls’ 800 metres.
The 16 year-old who won bronze in the 1500 metres, initially finished third, clocking 2:10.58 minutes but was moved up to the silver medal position after Jamaican Rushana Dwyer was disqualified for jostling and obstruction.
Haynes enjoyed a dream start to the race after Dwyer and fellow country athlete Jody-Ann Mitchell (2:09.73) set a quick pace.
Nevertheless, the silky smooth Haynes surged to the front on the bell lap with 400 metres to go and looked on course to producing a second gold for Barbados.
With a determined look on her face, Haynes quickened the pace down the backstretch and attempted to sprint home before she appeared to be tripped by Dwyer and hobbled across the finish line in pain and (AGB)
