Barbadians are being warned that with the start of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane season, there is the possibility the island could be hit by a hurricane this season.

Acting director of the Barbados Meteorological Services Sabu Best gave the warning yesterday during the Department of Emergency Management’s annual press conference at the start of the hurricane season. The season started yesterday and runs until November 30.

“We’re seeing more storms and more intense hurricanes and, added to that, they are intensifying rapidly. All centres are indicating an above-average hurricane season for the Atlantic basin. Almost every single year we’re being impacted by a tropical cyclone.

“Luckily, so far, the intensities we’re looking at, tropical storm to Category 1 hurricanes. But you have to understand when you have so many tropical cyclones and the occurrence is happening so frequent, then the risk [is] greater for an impact. There may be a year or two we escape, but don’t let your guard down,” he warned. (RA)
