Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has hinted at a new air transportation initiative to boost regional travel and make it more “affordable”.

Addressing a town hall meeting in Los Angeles on Wednesday with more than 200 Barbadians and other West Indians, and also streamed via Zoom, she said: “We are working with all (air) carriers to make air travel in the region affordable.”

The meeting, held at the Los Angeles Community College in Culver City, was organised by the Barbados Association of Southern California with assistance from the Barbados’ diplomatic mission in Washington headed by Ambassador Noel Lynch. Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali also took part.

“LIAT was a necessity for as long as we could afford it. But whether we liked it or not, when you have a choice between keeping people fed and putting money in a company that is an airline which has no passengers for the better part of over a year, then you really don’t have a choice. The Caribbean has over 20 airlines and we have to find ways of making the (air transportation) environment a hospitable environment,” Mottley said. (TB)
