It’s all about positioning for the future.

That’s what new president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Dr Ronnie Yearwood, told members of the party’s United Kingdom (UK) branch.

Speaking at a specially arranged virtual town hall meeting in the UK on Wednesday, Yearwood said he expected his tenure as president to be an extremely challenging one but also an opportunity to do something great for the DLP.

“There is a new politics at play, and that’s how we have to position ourselves in the future. I want to have a conversation with those at home in Barbados, those in the UK. New politics is about creating different opportunities so that you can be the best of who you are. So often in Barbados, that is lacking. There simply are not enough opportunities,” the University of the West Indies lecturer added.

The DLP leader said it was not that  Barbados did not have the time, talent or facilities to make its citizens great, but noted a lack of true opportunities was retarding the country’s growth prospects. “So the question is now, how do we go about creating chances for young people to be excellent?” (BA)
