Bajans storm to victory

A magnificent 177-opening stand between skipper Hayley Matthews (99) and Kycia Knight (72) powered defending champions Barbados to an emphatic 149-run win against the Windwards yesterday at Providence in the opening round of the CB Insurance Women’s Super50.

The 24-year-old classy right-hander Matthews faced 133 balls and hit eight boundaries in magnificent 99 while left-hander Knight hammered seven fours in a well-compiled 72 from 108 balls.

Kyshona Knight, Kycia’s twin sister, weighed in with an unbeaten 27 with three fours as Barbados reached 227-2 in their 50 overs before dismissing the Windwards for a meagre 78 in 23.1 overs.

Japhina Joseph (18) and Pearl Etienne (16) were the only batters to reach 15 as seamer Shanika Bruce with 4-48, Shamilia Connell (3-9) and Aaliyah Alleyne (2-14) combined to bowl out the Windwards. (SD)
